Overview

Within 1 mile of Sidmouth, this characterful cottage, that is one of three, has been carefully converted from a range of barns to provide high quality holiday accommodation. Bulverton was originally part of the Manor of Sidmouth, once owned by the Monks of St Michael. Sheldrake cottage was originally an 18th century corn mill, while Grebe and Pintail cottages formed part of the early Victorian farm buildings. Adjacent to the owner's delightful home the cottages enjoy a south facing aspect, each one having its own private patio overlooking the large shared garden and surrounding countryside, an ideal place for relaxing on warm summer evenings.   

Sheldrake cottage is ideal for those in need of ground floor accommodation, but there are some steps to the entrance (a ramp can be provided on request) and the property adjoins one of the roads that leads to Sidmouth. Spacious living /dining room with high beamed vaulted ceiling and pleasing outlook over the garden. Modern well-equipped oak fitted kitchen. Two Ground floor bedrooms, one with a double bed and en-suite shower, further bedroom with a single bed. Bathroom with shower over bath and W.C.  On the first floor there is a third bedroom with twin beds and en-suite W.C.   Private patio with garden furniture and BBQ. Use of large mature shared grounds. There is an acre of enclosed lawn area for dog exercising. The owner does request that dogs are kept on a lead when in any other areas of the grounds, such as car park, communal gardens and patio area.

We hired this property in July 2021 and it was not as expected from the description on the website. It is in a good location, but is adjacent to a busy, noisy road, close to a bend and with poor visibility for access. The cottage is small for 5 people, with a tiny kitchenette. The description is misleading. When we booked the website stated there was a dishwasher, there is not, but Sweetcombe Cottages have amended this following our complaint. We expected to have 3 WCs, but the en-suite shower room does not have a WC, this needs to be made clear. The cottage was dirty. A lot of the cutlery, crockery, and utensils needed to be washed before we could use them. Following our complaint Sweetcombe Cottages said we should have contacted them to come and wash up for us, but we were not prepared to wait for a cup of tea or to cook dinner until this had happened! The sofa and is grime coloured and sticky, not the pristine white with pattern as shown on the website. The carpets are deeply embedded with animal hair. They had clearly not had more than a surface vacuum. On running fingers across the carpets they came away with balls of animal hair. Anything damp, such as rucksacks left on the carpet, had animal hair stuck to them when lifted. We knew pets were accepted at this property but expected the cottage to be thoroughly cleaned between guests, including thorough cleaning of carpets. The vacuum cleaner was unusable, the bag over half full, the roller entangled with hair, and most of the bristles worn out. If we had contacted Sweetcombe Cottages to deal with this during our holiday as they suggested we would have needed to sacrifice a day of our holiday whilst they did so. Further a table lamp had an electrical safety fault, and the en-suite shower didn't drain properly and intermittently smelt of sewerage. We assume these reported issues have now been rectified. This was the worst holiday cottage we have ever stayed in.

Hello, We have rented out this property as a holiday let for over 20 years, with many returning customers, including all of July 2021. All of the cleaning and maintenance issues raised have been resolved. As you say, we followed up your complaint straight away and informed you we would have liked to be able to resolve your complaint immediately, at your convenience to have as little impact on your holiday as possible.
