Things To Do in Devon During Autumn

autumn walking

East Devon is one of the most beautiful places to visit and is packed with autumn activities! Enjoy quaint seaside towns with delightful independent shops & tea rooms, stunning landscapes with burnt orange woodlands and gorgeous empty beaches with crystal waters still mild(ish) from the summer sun. Our local team love exploring the area and are delighted to share our favourite things to do this autumn.

The Exe Estuary Trail– This dog friendly route can be done on foot or bike. Starting from Exmouth, park in the Estuary car park or along Mudbank Lane and follow the little red ‘route 2’ signs. The trail takes you right around the Exe Estuary from Exmouth to Dawlish, passing through the pretty villages of Lympstone, Topsham & Starcross to name a few.  The estuary is of international importance for wintering waders and wildfowl, supporting thousands of birds.  RSPB reserves near Topsham and Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve offer some of the best opportunities to view wildlife along the estuary. Stop off for a coffee and cake at The Boathouse café by the boatyard or a hearty lunch and refreshing drink at The Turf towards star cross. Return back via the path, or hop on the ferry from Star Cross to Exmouth Marina. The full route map can be seen here. There is bike hire available at either end. We have a range of properties available in Exmouth such as the new Church Mews or marina bolt holes like Rest Ashored & Watersedge. The beautiful Finelia House is also available in Topsham with private parking.

Walking Routes– Autumn is the perfect time to explore Devon’s stunning walking routes. Explore gorgeous beaches along The South West Coast Path, rustling woodlands on the East Devon Way, and easy walks along Sidmouth’s Byes riverside walk. Find more information on our favourite walks on our other blogs here. With all East Devon beaches welcoming dogs from the 1st October, it is the perfect time to enjoy a dog friendly walking holiday.

Food Festivals– The South West is known for its delicious fresh local produce. The ‘Taste East Devon’ food festival runs from the 3rd– 18th September 2022, across a range of locations- From farm feasts to brewery open days, seafood tasting experiences to BBQs and parties: some events will be ticketed, some will be open freely for all. The Powderham Food Festival will be celebrating its 11th anniversary on the 1st & 2nd October this year. There will be delicacies from some of the region’s best food & drink producers, as well as live demonstrations, children’s activities & competitions.

Dartmouth Steam Railway– Within an hour’s drive to Paignton from most of our properties, you can access the wonderful Dartmouth Steam Railway. They have a range of tickets available to explore the beautiful South Devon area by steam train, river boat or bus!

Beer Quarry Caves– Enjoy tours through the vast underground caverns and see for yourself the methods used to quarry and deliver the huge blocks of stone, working conditions and hardships endured by the workforce since the Roman times to 1920 when the works stopped. Bookings are preferred and can be arranged here. They are open every day until 31st October.
