Autumn Walking Routes in Devon

Autumn in East Devon is one of the most beautiful times to visit. With uncrowded towns & beaches, warm temperatures and stunning orange hues covering East Devon’s woodlands and areas of Natural Beauty, it is the perfect time to enjoy autumn walks along Devon’s renowned walking routes. Here at Sweetcombe, our team love exploring the local area and have put together our favourite autumn walks in Devon.

Otterton to Budleigh – This walk can start at either end, walking A to B getting a bus back, or enjoying lunch at either end before walking back. Otterton is well known for its pretty cottages and its working watermill, well worth visiting along with its delightful café & shop. To access the footpath, walk west along fore street passing Otterton Mill on your left, cross over the stone bridge and the footpath gate is on your left. Follow the path with the River Otter on your left all the way to Budleigh Salterton, bringing you out by the Lime Kiln car park. For a circular route, this helpful article linked here will guide you back an alternative route. Fancy staying in one of our cottages at either end? We have a lovely selection to choose from, such as Cloud Nine and Streamside in Otterton or Lawnside, The Roost in Budleigh.

Branscombe to Beer – A rewarding walk along the The South West Coast Path. Park in Branscombe at The village hall or National Trust car parks, walking down the track to the beach or start from the beach car park by The Sea Shanty café. Cross the ford by the beach car park, where a style leads into the field and up the East cliffs signed ‘Coast Path Beer 2m’. Past the fields, steep steps lead to the top with stunning views of Branscombe & Sidmouth along with a bench to catch your breath! Follow the coast path signs to Beer reaching the foot of Beer Head caravan park, follow the signs down Common Lane to reach the centre of Beer and enjoy a well-deserved cream tea, fish & chips or ice cream (or all of the above!) On return back to Branscombe, treat yourself to a hearty dinner or refreshing drink at one of the two pubs, The Masons Arms & The Fountain Head. We have some lovely cottages to choose from in Branscombe such as Lambs Meadow & Rosechurch Cottage, or October availability in Heron beach chalet!

Sidbury, Harcombe & Sweetcombe circular walk – A route along The East Devon Way and one of Sweetcombe’s favourite (can you guess why?) This moderate circular walk, partly on the East Devon Way, starts and finishes in the village of Sidbury. The walk takes you through the valleys and farmland where a traditional Devon dairy herd of Friesians call home. Along the walk, be sure to check out St Giles Church to find the Saxon crypt and Norman diaper work. The geographers amongst you will appreciate the dissected plateau where the Sid and Roncombe Valleys join, divided by Pen Hill. Nestle yourself in the lovely village life of Sidbury by staying in one of our cottages, such as the fabulous thatched Jubilee Cottage or Willens Cottage .
