Exmouth's two mile sandy beach is great for paddling, swimming and building sandcastles. There are rock pools and areas suitable for windsurfing and water skiing.
The town has a wealth of tea houses, restaurants and take-aways, numerous historic inns, night spots and live shows. But on the other hand, if you seek none of these, then you will probably remain unaware of their existence, for Exmouth is also for those who enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors, but with modern comforts close at hand.
A bustling waterfront with the constant activity of working and pleasure craft, windsurfing, water skiing, boat trips to Torbay or up the River Exe to Topsham, are all on offer.
Exmouth is an ideal touring centre from which to see more of Devon. Bus and rail services link Exmouth to the Cathedral City of Exeter just 12 miles away and the M5 interchange is also within easy access. Dartmoor, Exmoor and Torbay are all within an easy drive.
The Exe estuary supports an abundance of birdlife, including sandpipers and rare avocets. An Exe Estuary Circular ticket which combines rail and ferry travel runs between Exeter, Exmouth, Starcross and Exeter in either direction. Tickets can be purchased from train stations along the route or from the conductor on the train. Exmouth also marks the Western Gateway to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. UNESCO heritage status was given to the coast of Devon and Dorset in 2001 in recognition of its unique landscape, which spans 185 million years of Earth history.
