Eco-Friendly Holidays

Whilst away from home, be it a holiday or a short trip, there are many things you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint and be more eco-friendly.

You might wish to travel to your destination by public transport (if feasible). Our glorious part of East Devon is well served by public transport from around the country.

If you would like more information of how to get to your final holiday destination, then just telephone us and we will help you plan your journey. Should pickups be required from local railway or coach stations we can furnish you with details of our local car hire firms who are reliable and willing to help with cases etc. Where possible we like to promote local businesses.

Even the smallest actions can make a big difference to the environmental footprint made by your stay. Turning off the lights, television, heating and air conditioning when you leave your accommodation can make a significant difference to how much energy is used.

Follow our tips below to help save the planet! Most importantly, enjoy your stay - wherever you go.

Give the car a rest - Leave the car behind, if only for a day. Walk, cycle or use public transport.

Conserve energy - reduce energy by switching off lights and closing windows if the heating is on. Never leave appliances on standby. Always turn off at source.

Increasing costs for water treatment and flood defences mean that we all should try to be use water wisely. Please be considerate when using water and avoid running taps. Recycling and Waste Collection Service details will be found in your holiday cottage. Please read carefully on arrival as for your specific dates for rubbish collection in your chosen area. Devon has gone GREEN and we would very much hope you will help us in our aims to follow the new legislation.

Landfill Waste, a fortnightly collection; please see localised dates as shown in your chosen property. Waste put out alongside your bin will NOT be collected.

Food Waste, a weekly collection of food waste using the new indoor caddy and outdoor food bins. Please only use compostable caddy liners as provided at your holiday cottage. You can put any raw, cooked and uneaten food into your caddy.

Dry Recyclables, a weekly collection of dry recyclables from your green box, now including plastic bottles.

Your holiday property will have a leaflet which explains all the above and more. We do ask that you adhere to what can and can’t be put in the individual bins.

Use local products, they give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities. We hope perhaps the owner of your property has left you details in your Welcome Pack but alternatively ask the local Tourist Information Centre for details on farmers’ markets etc.

Help to look after the landscape and wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsible. Please remember to close gates in the countryside for both your own safety and those of the animals .

If you have your dog with you, please do enjoy our countryside but remember to be considerate to both farming animals you may come across on walks across our fields and to other walkers by picking up your dogs mess.
